windows post apocalyptica by ekud windows post apocalyptica by ekud
my orignal intention for this piece was to be a post apocalyptic billboard. i then remembered that trees etc. are fucken hard to render using only photoshop, so I gave this piece a more surreal, industrial feel. It is rather similar to 'Huis Clos' in its metallic feel, but it's purpose and influence is completely different...

going by comments I received on 'huis clos', i spent more time with the rust effects on this piece, and the majority of the work in this piece went into getting a good, realistic metallic effect. Although i spent some time on the actually 'poster' the metallic surrounds took up much more time.

This piece was done using Photoshop 4, with no extraneous plugins. Please feel free to comment / grade / ignore =]

I find it really inspirational to see that you have come from around the same level as anyone else, and improved over time, and now you are getting work from big companies and brand names! It's nice when people leave their old work in their gallery.

well, my first post was irrational and harsh, but still this piece really doesn't set with me. i suppose getting DD pulls a lot of attention to the art. but i have to say i really don't like this wall. i do like the red flare however.

i think what could be improved is the chains, the perspective is kinda wack on them and they don't connect. the background rust is too saturated and could be toned down a bit.

the border along the background rust isn't themed to fit the rest of the image.

i like the concept, and the middle, but i don't really like the execution. its good attempt, but could use some refining or redoing.

i'm just going to leave the vote blank, because i don't think the vote will be all that helpful.

I can believe you have spend much time on this. Technically there are a couple of things that costs lot of time and patience.

But for the whole image I don't think it's very good. The Win98 thingies sux. I hate that stuff. And the chains are not really hooked up to the board etc.

But nice image. I really like that sort of angle!

dark-angel Featured By Owner Jun 26, 2001
xKevinCleanx - You probably got a note from jark because you commented on the choice of dd for this piece. Ekud has nothing to do with the choice of dd, so don't comment on it here...

As for the picture itself. To be quite honest the flare type thing threw me off. The texturing is very nice. My only criticism really is with the actual content of the billboard. I think after you had finished with the surroundings, you should have spent more time on the poster as well. As it seems to detract from the picture overall, instead of adding to it.

I do like that texturing though.

This one's nice but I don't know if it's nice enough for daily-devitation.

There are things on the wp wich don't really fit together.

so who else got a note from jark because you weren't sure, or didn't see why this was the best submitted art of today...I got one and pretty much laughed, he acted like i insulted the guy, I know this belongs in the forums but i think that's bs

well. after careful consideration of what i was going to say, here i am typing up a comment on a piece that honestly i do not like. the attempt is stellar, the chains do look rather nice, but in the long run the piece does not come together well at all. the colors chosen don't match in my opinion, the necessity of a windows 98 screen shot inside the frame for the billboard baffles me, it's at a nice angle though, only it's not very realistic. i would like to see what you can do based on our comments though, make it better, try harder. you can get good it just takes patience. i also don't see a need for "ekud" on it, it detracts from the small aesthetic value the piece has initially.

when confronted with hate and ignorance, one must liquify.

the defiance is ahead.

greg47 Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2001
I like the texturing. Would be nice if you "welded" the chains onto the billboarrd with the smudge tool, and put something more interesting on the billboard than a mutilated windows 98. Overall, I like it, but there's a great deal of room for improvement.

Aww, come on, phu. It's not that bad! In fact... it is a decent piece of eye candy. Sure its straight out of a tutorial... but it looks neat anyway. Sure the thing in the middle is... out of place but still. The metal looks good. ;) (Wink)

Don't mind me, just stalkin' ancient comments here. C:
netghost Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2001
Hmm... some constructive criticism since I think this could use a little work. Let's see..

-The shadow from the billboard or whatever it isn't cast very well. To get a more realistic image, the shadow should be flat against the wall, not flat to the billboard.

-The chains probably could be melded to the frame using the smudge tool in photoshop pretty easily, then it would look like welding.

-If you use 'wrap edges' instead of 'repeat edge pixels' on the triabgular wave from the screenshot, you won't get those white edges. (I assume that was the filter...)

Anyways, congrats and I hope you read this, you have a good beginning here.
arage Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2001
um, i dont get it. definitely misery's tutorials at work. um, the chains aren't even connected to the billboard, they just overlap it. metal isn't convincing enough. study some photographs, it helps. and to answer your question, i wouldn't comment if this wasn't a DD. the reason you are getting coments is because you made the DD. do note that although i don't agree with this being the DD, my comments contain things i noticed in your piece, that is all. if you can't handle the general opinion of others, then don't submit.

just a comment here for everyone..... please realise when i did this, i did not have you, or a dd in mind. and just remember, whilst you might be trying to make a statement to the admin, you're also judging my work. the gentleman who gave me an F-- for all categories (including technique) is clearly trying to make a statement, but he isn't realising that I read these comments too.

would you be making these comments if it wasnt a DD? no, you'd be making helpful suggestions, and actually _telling_ me how to improve it. not just saying 'its crap, i dont like it'. if you don't like it (and you're more than entitled not to) then tell me how to make it better. the worst for of criticism is the one which leaves you no room to improve.
